Postcard and Paper Show Provides a Window to the Past through Antique Photos and Postcards

Worth, TX (PRWEB) May 23, 2008 -- Over one million antique photos, vintage postcards and paper collectibles provide a window to the past at the 4th Annual Fort Worth Postcard and Paper Show at the end of this month. Many rare images dating back to the turn of the century and beyond reveal interesting historical information and are treasures for decorators and collectors alike. The unique event boasts one of the largest selections of postcards, from vintage to modern, available in Texas.
What can you find on a postcard? How about views of Fort Worth, Dallas, and the surrounding area dating all the way back to 1900. This includes everything from historic buildings and landmarks to that favorite old diner where you used to eat. Doug Harman, former CEO of the Fort Worth Convention and Visitors Bureau will be selling items from his extensive postcard and paper collection which has been exhibited in museums. It includes subjects such as oil industry, cattle, 101 Ranch, Texas cowboys, rodeo, early aviation and items such as broadsides and movie posters plus an original lithograph of General Worth, standing in uniform. "You can find out some of the most amazing things about your town," said Harman. "Older neighborhoods which are now going through gentrification often have postcards of them before things changed."
You can also discover great cards from across Texas, all 49 other states, and around the world. Maybe a collectible topic such as lighthouses, stadiums, pretty ladies, children or animals suits your fancy. Other subjects include holiday and patriotic themes such as Civil War and military die cuts and 4th of July and Memorial Day postcards. In truth, you can find almost anything depicted on a postcard. And the best part; collecting postcards won't break the bank. Many cards sold at the show go for less than $3 apiece.
In terms of paper collectibles and ephemera, the show offers everything from matchbooks and sheet music to vintage advertising and antique photographs. Quite a bit of local history is available such as old Stockyards and State Fair memorabilia. There will be hand-tinted cards, early postal history, documents, autographs, magazines, newspapers, maps, prints, posters, Texas paper currency, letterhead, paper dolls, old Valentines and Easter cards, Santa Claus die cuts, Big Chief tablets, Victorian die cuts taken from early scrapbooks, hold-to-light cards, pages from turn-of-the-century flower catalogs and celebrity pictures such as Marilyn Monroe and early ones of John Wayne. Whether you are a collector, are doing genealogy research, or need unique images for decorating or scrapbooking, there will be great finds. Vintage images can be enlarged and framed for home décor and small images are suitable for embellishing scrapbooks.
It is also an ideal place to come and learn more about the postcards or paper items you may already have as the dealers possess decades of experience in their respective specialties. You are welcome to bring paper items you have inherited, purchased from estate sales or antique shops to obtain appraisals or even sell or trade them. If you simply want to keep what you own but need to store it properly to preserve its value, there will be archival supplies available for purchase to help you protect your treasures.
The show is being held at the Lockheed-Martin Recreation Center, 3400 Bryant Irvin Rd. (between I-20 and I-30 in Southwest Fort Worth), Saturday, May 31st from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, June 1st from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $3.00 per person, good for both days, children are free.
